TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE: Keke Palmer recalled being “thre@tened in a terrifying way” by her own mother at just 12 years old: “I felt completely helpless…”

Keke Palmer, the talented actress and Emmy winner, has always been an open book

when it comes to her experiences in the entertainment industry.

In a recent interview with *The Cut*, Palmer shared a deeply personal and traumatic moment from her childhood that has stayed with her.

At just 12 years old, Palmer recalls an interaction with her former manager

that left a lasting impact on her emotional well-being.

The incident occurred when Palmer’s former manager made a comment about her mother’s health, telling her that her mother would die if she didn’t lose weight.

This harsh and inappropriate comment deeply affected Palmer, causing her to spiral with worry. “That really, really traumatized me and stressed me out,” she said. “It got me thinking she was going to die, thinking about things like medical bills. It was just too much.”

This unsettling experience was just one of many challenges Palmer faced as a child actor, navigating the pressures of fame at such a young age. Along with dealing with difficult comments, Palmer also felt the weight of being a provider for her family. Despite the fact that her parents never explicitly pressured her, she sensed the responsibility to financially support them. “I hated my parents for a long time,” Palmer admitted. “There was so much pressure to rise to the occasion for my community, for my parents, for my siblings, for their sacrifices. They weren’t saying it, but that was the reality.”

Palmer’s career began at the age of 10, when she made her on-screen debut in *Barbershop 2: Back in Business* in 2004. That same year, she appeared in several television shows, including *Cold Case* and *Strong Medicine*, as well as the television film *The Wool Cap*, which earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination. By the time Palmer was a teenager, she was already a household name, starring in the Disney Channel movie *Jump In!* and headlining the popular Nickelodeon series *True Jackson, VP*.

However, with the fame and success came the undeniable pressures of being a child star. In an exclusive interview with *PEOPLE* in October 2024, Palmer further opened up about the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, particularly when it came to relationships. Palmer recalled being involved in an inappropriate relationship at the age of 15 while filming *True Jackson, VP*. She admitted to dating someone five years older than her, explaining the complex emotions she felt at the time. “I was 15, he was 20,” Palmer shared. “I was trying to balance between being really young, but also feeling quite mature. If I thought it was inappropriate, then I wouldn’t have done it.”

Despite her understanding that the relationship was not ideal, Palmer confessed that at the time, she felt isolated and believed that no one could understand her experiences. “Obviously I shouldn’t have been 15 dating no 20-year-old,” she said. “But in my mind it was like, ‘I got a full-time job… Can’t nobody understand me but a grown man.’ But he knew there was a lot of stuff that there’s no damn way for me to understand at damn 15.”

Palmer’s honesty about her past reveals the pressures and complexities of growing up under the scrutiny of the public eye. The actress’s struggles with the pressures of her career and relationships reflect the difficult realities faced by many young stars who are thrust into the limelight before they have the chance to truly understand themselves.

Now, as Palmer continues to build a successful career, she is determined to take control of her narrative and speak openly about her experiences. In her upcoming memoir, *Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative*, Palmer promises to explore more of her journey and the lessons she has learned along the way.

Through her openness, Keke Palmer continues to serve as a powerful voice for others, reminding them that it’s okay to be vulnerable, to struggle, and to take ownership of their story. From navigating childhood stardom to dealing with personal challenges, Palmer’s honesty is not only empowering but also an important reminder of the complexities of fame and the resilience it takes to overcome hardship.
