Before rising to fame with iconic roles on shows like *Friday Night Lights* and *True Detective*,
Taylor Kitsch experienced some of the toughest years of his life.
The actor, who is now known for his powerful performances, once faced the harsh reality of homelessness as he tried to make it in New York City.
In an exclusive interview with *People* magazine, Kitsch opened up about his early struggles, revealing that he was once sleeping on the subway.
“I was literally sleeping on the subway,” he said, describing his life as a struggling actor who had just moved from Canada to New York City in 2002.
“It was a blue train from downtown all the way up to 182nd and at night they’d change, they’d take longer, A, C or E,” he shared with *US Weekly* in 2017, reflecting on his days of uncertainty.
Despite his tough beginnings, Kitsch’s time as a subway dweller was brief—less than a month. He credits a pivotal meeting with his talent manager for changing the trajectory of his life. The encounter came when Kitsch was at his lowest, and his manager took a chance on him. “She was like, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘Character pieces.’ She was like, ‘All right, I’ll take a risk on you,’” Kitsch recalled.
The actor, who has always been passionate about deeply embodying characters, added, “All I’ve ever wanted to do is disappear into different characters. It’s never been about leading a show or being in the limelight or money.” His focus on the craft, rather than fame, proved to be the key to his success.
In 2006, Kitsch’s hard work paid off when he landed the role of Tim Riggins on the beloved series *Friday Night Lights*. The show became a defining moment in his career, with his portrayal of the troubled yet lovable football player resonating deeply with viewers. “People, for some reason or another, just really gravitated to Riggins,” Kitsch explained. “It truly affected my life, and all for the better.” The role solidified his place in Hollywood and opened doors for future opportunities.
Despite his success, Kitsch has always remained down-to-earth and disconnected from the glitz and glam of Hollywood life. In a 2023 interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*, Kitsch revealed that he was never drawn to the flashy lifestyle of Los Angeles. “I got a later start in the business, and I was able to have a sense of who I was and what I needed,” he said. “Being in L.A. was never a great thing for me, and I love being out here – there’s just so much peace to grasp.”
In 2023, Kitsch made the bold decision to move to Montana, a choice that reflects his desire for tranquility and a simpler life. His love for wildlife photography and the natural beauty of the area drew him to Bozeman, where he now calls home. “That’s what this place represents to me: It’s not going to solve every problem, but hopefully it will help at least one person work toward what they need,” Kitsch explained, highlighting the peace he’s found in the quiet of Montana.
Alongside his personal peace, Kitsch is also dedicating time to a cause close to his heart—helping veterans and those in recovery. His passion for giving back stems from a deeply personal experience. His sister’s battle with addiction opened his eyes to the importance of sober spaces. “I didn’t even know sober escapes existed until I had the crash course with my sis,” Kitsch shared. “I was like, ‘Man, it sounds incredible to offer people a chance to reconnect in nature and slow things down.’”
Kitsch is currently focused on building a space that offers healing and empowerment for people in the veteran and sober/recovery communities. “I’m just really excited about this, about it being a base camp for people to empower themselves,” he said. His efforts reflect his commitment to creating positive change, providing a refuge for those who need it most.
Today, Taylor Kitsch is not just an actor, but a person deeply connected to the causes that matter most to him. From sleeping on the subway to becoming a beloved television star, Kitsch’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of giving back.
