‘Today’ Host Sheinelle Jones Reveals Reason for Month-Long Absence

NBC’s Today show viewers have been missing a familiar face for the past month—Sheinelle Jones.
The 46-year-old anchor, who last appeared on the program on December 18, 2024, recently broke her silence to explain the reason behind her absence.
Sheinelle Jones Addresses Her Absence

On Wednesday, January 15, Jones took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message with fans who had been checking in on her.

She revealed that she has been dealing with a “family health matter,” which required her to step away from her on-air duties.

“Hi everybody … I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show,” she wrote. “I want to share that I’m taking time to deal with a family health matter. It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have not only the support of my Today show family but also all of you.”
Although Jones didn’t provide further details on the health situation, she reassured fans that her time away wouldn’t be permanent. “Your kindness means so much to me. I’ll see you soon,” she added.
A Personal Family Matter
A source told Page Six that the health issue is “serious,” but clarified that it does not involve Jones herself or her three children—14-year-old Kayin and 12-year-old twins, Clara and Uche—whom she shares with her husband, Uche Ojeh.

Support from Her Today Colleagues
Jones’ Today show family has been vocal in their support, sending her love and well-wishes as she takes this time off. Fellow co-host Jenna Bush Hager commented on Jones’ Instagram post, writing, “You are a queen and are LOVED beyond measure! Wrapping our arms around you, always ❤️.”
Savannah Guthrie also shared her sentiments, writing, “We love you so. Not the same without you. We will see you soon ❤️.”
On Wednesday morning’s broadcast, Guthrie read Jones’ statement aloud on-air, emphasizing that she and her colleagues deeply miss their friend. “We know so many of you have been asking about Sheinelle and missing her, and we miss her too,” she said.
Craig Melvin echoed the sentiment, saying, “We all love you and we are so looking forward to having you back.”

During the Third Hour segment, Dylan Dreyer also addressed the absence, telling viewers, “We know so many of you are missing [Sheinelle]. Obviously, of course, we are too. We can’t wait for her to come back, and Sheinelle, we love you.” Al Roker, who has been filling in for Jones, blew a kiss to the camera in a sweet gesture.
A Season of Change for Today
Jones’ temporary absence is just one of several shake-ups the Today show has experienced recently. Longtime anchor Hoda Kotb departed the program on January 10 after 26 years, marking a significant transition for the morning show.
While fans eagerly await Jones’ return, they continue to send their love and support during this challenging time. As she promised, viewers can expect to see her back on their screens soon.
