Savannah Guthrie made a shocking comment about Craig Melvin’s wife during her latest interview: “I still remember the first time they met…”

In a surprising and lighthearted revelation, *Today Show* hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin recently shared the charming story behind their unique friendship,

which began in a rather unexpected way—one that even involved a bit of interference with Craig’s romantic life.

According to Melvin, Savannah was indirectly responsible for “derailing” his 2010 date with his future wife, and while it may have been an awkward moment at the time,

it ultimately sparked the beginning of their enduring and close friendship.

It all began nearly a decade ago, in 2010, when Craig Melvin was on a date with a woman who would eventually become his wife, journalist and fellow *Today Show* host,

Lindsay Czarniak. Craig, who at the time was relatively new to the *Today* Show team, had arranged a dinner date with Lindsay,

but little did he know that Savannah Guthrie—his future co-anchor and friend—was about to play a pivotal role in this encounter.

As Craig and Lindsay were enjoying their evening together, the pair ran into Savannah, who, unbeknownst to them, had also been dining at the same restaurant. In what Craig described as a completely innocent encounter, Savannah joined their table, much to the surprise of the couple. While she had no intention of causing any disruption to Craig’s date, her presence made for an unexpected twist.

“I’m sitting there with Lindsay, and suddenly, Savannah appears out of nowhere,” Craig recalled, laughing. “She just barged in, all smiles, and started talking like she had known Lindsay for years. It was definitely an interruption, but I couldn’t help but laugh because Savannah is just so friendly and charismatic.”

Despite the initial shock of the situation, Craig and Lindsay quickly warmed to Savannah’s bubbly personality, and what could have been an awkward moment turned into a fun and memorable evening. Savannah’s natural charm and wit left an impression on both Craig and Lindsay, and the chance encounter led to the forging of a strong friendship that would later evolve into one of the most iconic and beloved pairings on *The Today Show*.

For Savannah, the unexpected meeting was just another opportunity to connect with her colleagues and future friends. She was quick to make everyone feel at ease, and her ability to bond with people, both on and off camera, has been one of the key reasons behind her success as a beloved figure on *Today*.

In the years that followed, Craig and Savannah’s relationship would develop into a strong and supportive friendship. Their natural chemistry became evident on air, as they frequently teamed up for co-hosting duties. The playful banter and camaraderie between them quickly became a fan favorite, with viewers tuning in every morning to see their fun interactions.

Over time, Savannah and Craig’s friendship became an integral part of the *Today Show* family. Their shared experiences, both professionally and personally, brought them closer together, and their mutual respect for one another has been a cornerstone of their enduring partnership on the show.

While the story of the 2010 dinner date may have started with an unexpected interruption, it ultimately set the stage for what would become one of the most cherished on-screen friendships in daytime television. Both Savannah and Craig agree that their personal connection has made working together on *The Today Show* all the more enjoyable and rewarding.

The relationship between Savannah and Craig has continued to flourish over the years, and fans continue to love the dynamic they share. Whether they’re co-hosting interviews, reporting the news, or just sharing a laugh during casual moments on set, their friendship remains a highlight of *The Today Show*.

Reflecting on that fateful dinner date, Craig said, “In the end, I couldn’t have asked for a better person to share this journey with—on and off air. Savannah not only played a pivotal role in the start of my professional career at *Today*, but she also became a true friend. Our friendship was meant to be.”

For Savannah, she views her role in Craig and Lindsay’s love story with fondness. “I’m happy to have been there, even if it was a little bit of a surprise for them,” she said. “I think it was just one of those serendipitous moments that helped create a wonderful bond.”

As for Craig and Lindsay’s relationship, the evening turned out to be far more than just an interruption—it was the beginning of a beautiful love story that has since led to marriage and a growing family. And for Savannah and Craig, it was the beginning of a strong and enduring friendship that continues to delight *Today Show* fans every day.
