MOTHERHOOD GUILT: Julia Stiles admitted feeling guilty for accepting an SNL role, revealing it made her feel torn between career and children: “It was a decision I regret deeply.”

Julia Stiles recently opened up about her impromptu cameo on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in December 2023,

revealing how the sketch came together so rapidly that she had to scramble to arrange childcare for her children.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Stiles shared the behind-the-scenes challenges she faced when contacted just days before the live show.

“I was contacted the Friday before the Saturday show,” Stiles recalled. “I scrambled to find someone to take care of my kids until the middle of the night.”

At the time, Stiles had just given birth to her third child, adding an extra layer of complexity to her already hectic schedule.

Despite the short notice and her responsibilities as a new mother, the actress was eager to participate in the SNL segment.

Stiles’ cameo occurred during the “Weekend Update” segment of the show, where she joined cast member Chloe Fineman for a playful recreation of the iconic Juilliard audition scene from the 2001 film Save the Last Dance. This scene, which featured Stiles’ character, Sara, auditioning for a spot at Juilliard, has since become a memorable moment for fans of the movie. In the SNL sketch, the two actresses extended the scene with comedic flair, bringing a sense of nostalgia to audiences who were fans of the film.

The appearance was particularly special for Stiles, as it marked her return to the SNL stage after more than two decades. Her last experience with the show had been in March 2001, when she hosted just two months after Save the Last Dance hit theaters. The contrast between her earlier hosting gig and this surprise cameo was not lost on the actress, who expressed her excitement about the unexpected opportunity.

Reflecting on the whirlwind nature of the experience, Stiles admitted that she didn’t know what the sketch would entail until the morning of the live show. “I didn’t know what the sketch was going to be until, I think, probably Saturday morning,” she said, explaining the unpredictable nature of the timing and details surrounding the appearance. Despite the uncertainty, she was thrilled by the chance to reconnect with SNL and relive a moment from her early career. “I thought it was so cool. I was excited to be there. It was so fun,” she added.

The episode, which aired in December 2023, featured actor Adam Driver as the host and Olivia Rodrigo as the musical guest. The sketch was part of a fun holiday-themed segment during the Weekend Update segment, with Fineman offering a unique holiday gift idea for the show’s hosts, Colin Jost and Michael Che. “The perfect holiday gift this year is the dance that Julia Stiles does at the end of the 2001 movie Save the Last Dance,” Fineman quipped before Stiles made her surprise appearance.

Stiles’ cameo was a hit with both the live audience and viewers at home, thanks to the nostalgic reference to her role in Save the Last Dance. Fans of the film will remember Stiles’ memorable dance scene at the movie’s climax, which became a symbol of her character’s journey and the movie’s themes of self-expression and overcoming obstacles. Recreating and extending that moment for a comedic purpose brought a fresh and humorous twist to a scene that had become iconic in popular culture.

The actress’ return to SNL was a full-circle moment in her career, with the appearance offering both a nostalgic nod to her past work and a reminder of her enduring presence in the entertainment industry. For Stiles, the experience was also a reminder of the balance she has had to strike between her career and family life. Despite the logistical challenges of finding childcare on short notice, Stiles was grateful for the chance to step back into the spotlight and share a lighthearted moment with SNL fans.

As Stiles continues to juggle her personal and professional life, the SNL cameo serves as a testament to her enduring versatility and willingness to embrace new opportunities, even when they come with unexpected challenges. For fans of Save the Last Dance, it was a welcome trip down memory lane, reminding everyone of the actress’s talent and charm that still shines through, even years after the film’s release.
