Kathie Lee Gifford “burst into tears” and mentioned she couldn’t be her true self anymore following the terrible fall: “I will be forever changed by this.”

Kathie Lee Gifford, the beloved former Today co-host, recently faced another health setback while recovering from her hip replacement surgery.

The 70-year-old revealed that she suffered a fractured pelvis in two places

after a fall at home, leading to a week-long hospital stay for physical therapy.

A Painful Setback in Recovery

Gifford explained that in the days leading up to the fall, she had been pushing herself physically despite still healing from her surgery.

She participated in multiple book signings in Nashville, where she moved around 300 books on her own. This exertion, she admitted, left her body weakened.

Reflecting on the incident, she acknowledged that she had overexerted herself. “It’s my own fault,” she stated, explaining that her body was already vulnerable when she hurried to the door to meet a friend and suddenly tripped.

“It didn’t take much because I was weak in that spot,” she shared. “And the next thing you know, I am back in the hospital with a fractured pelvis—the front and the back. That’s more painful than anything I went through with the hip. The pelvis is unbelievably painful. But anyway, here I am.”

A Humbling Experience

The television personality called the experience humbling, recognizing how aging has changed her body’s resilience. While she initially planned a shorter stay in the hospital, she ultimately decided to remain under medical care for a full week. “I don’t trust myself,” she admitted, knowing that rushing her recovery could lead to further complications.

“You think you know your body, and the next thing you know, your body changes when you get older,” Gifford reflected. “And as much as I don’t want to think about it, I am.”

Despite the challenges, she is taking this time to reflect and heal. While the summer season typically brings excitement and outdoor activities, Gifford has been forced to slow down. However, she sees this as a message from above.

“The Lord is telling me it’s time to slow down. I’ve been running my whole life. The Lord is telling me, ‘You’ve planted a gazillion roses. Try smelling them.’”

Overcoming a Difficult Recovery

Earlier this month, Gifford opened up about her struggles following hip replacement surgery, calling it one of the most painful experiences of her entire life. She revealed that the procedure was necessary due to her active lifestyle, which had taken a toll on her body over the years.

Her surgeon explained that her years of climbing mountains, performing on stage, and rarely resting her body had contributed to the need for surgery. However, Gifford has no regrets about the life she has led.

“Would I change that? No,” she said. “I was doing what God put me on this earth to do. Every year of it, I was doing what He called me to do.”

Celebrating Her New Book Despite the Challenges

While her hospitalization has undoubtedly been a difficult experience, Gifford has not allowed it to overshadow her latest professional accomplishment—the release of her new book, Herod and Mary: The True Story of the Tyrant King and the Mother of the Risen Savior.

The historical nonfiction work delves into the rule of King Herod and the journey of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she navigated the challenges of her time. According to the book’s official description, it provides deep insight into how Herod came to power, how corruption and ancient evil threatened the stability of a nation, and how a teenage Mary was called to traverse these obstacles to bring the Savior, Jesus, our living hope, into the world.

Gifford said the idea for the book first came to her while on a rabbinical trip to Israel. Encouraged by her son Cody, 34, she pursued the project, believing that these historical stories carry important messages of hope.

Looking Ahead with Faith

Despite the struggles she has faced with her health, Gifford remains focused on her faith and purpose. She recognizes that her time on earth is limited, but she hopes to continue spreading positivity and inspiration.

“I don’t know how much time the Lord has me still on this earth, but for whatever time it is, I pray that I would be useful… that I would be kind and helpful, and loving to people,” she said.

“I am a strong woman, but I’m a woman who for 60 years has been trying to do godly work, trying to do the right thing, trying to love people, and trying to represent the kingdom of God.”

As she continues her recovery, Gifford remains optimistic about the future, trusting in her faith and the healing process. She looks forward to the day she can return to her farm, dip her feet in her saltwater pool, and embrace the slower pace that life is calling her toward.
