Jenna Bush Hager found herself facing backlash after making fun of a guest’s relationship live on-air: “Watching them is like watching a bad sitcom…”

The Today show has seen its fair share of emotional and surprising moments over the years,

and Thursday’s episode delivered yet another unforgettable one. Just ahead of Valentine’s Day, co-host Jenna Bush Hager shared some unexpected marriage news—

though it wasn’t about her own relationship with husband Henry Hager.

Instead, Jenna, along with her co-host Savannah Guthrie, played matchmaker in a heartwarming live proposal that left the entire studio audience in awe.

A Valentine’s Surprise Like No Other

As part of a romantic segment, Jenna and Savannah welcomed a guest, Anna, to discuss her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend, Austin.

The couple had been living apart for 18 months due to Austin’s military service, which had stationed him nearly 8,000 miles away.

Anna believed she was simply there to talk about the challenges of maintaining a relationship across such a long distance. The Today team had even set up a video call with Austin, making Anna believe she would be seeing him virtually for a sweet Valentine’s message.

However, the moment quickly took an unexpected turn. Just as Anna was about to greet her boyfriend via video, Austin walked into the studio in person and, to her complete shock, got down on one knee to propose.

Tears, Laughter, and a Proposal to Remember

Overcome with emotion, Anna said “yes” before Austin could even get the words out. The couple embraced in a heartfelt moment that brought tears to the eyes of everyone watching, including Jenna and Savannah, who were visibly touched by the proposal.

As the couple sat down to talk about the unexpected moment, Savannah playfully quipped, “You really didn’t see this coming, did you?” Jenna echoed the sentiment, asking Anna if she had any idea a proposal was in the works. Anna admitted she was completely blindsided but thrilled by the surprise.

Jenna Bush Hager: The Today Show’s Ultimate Matchmaker

Jenna has long been known for her matchmaking efforts on Today, helping to spark connections between both fans and colleagues. Even after Hoda Kotb’s departure from the show, Jenna has continued her mission to bring people together.

Recently, she took it upon herself to find a date for Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim, who was serving as a guest co-host on Today with Jenna & Friends. On-air, Jenna openly declared her intention to “ship” Ego with someone, vowing to find her the perfect match.

“Okay, I hope it happens,” Ego responded, clearly amused by Jenna’s enthusiasm. Jenna, however, was determined, turning to the camera to enlist the help of Today viewers.

“If you guys have somebody, send it in!” she encouraged, promising to personally vet any potential suitors. “I’ll make sure they don’t have a record or anything,” she joked, making it clear she takes her matchmaking responsibilities seriously.

Jenna’s Thoughts on Marriage and Choosing the Right Partner

While she loves bringing people together, Jenna herself has been happily married for over 15 years. She and Henry Hager tied the knot in 2008 and share three children—Mila, 11, Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5.

During a recent discussion on Today, Jenna reflected on the key to a happy marriage, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right partner.

“Part of it is choosing the right person because they make you feel—they’re supportive,” she explained. “But they also make you feel like you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing because then you can do it well.”

Jenna’s marriage philosophy is evident in her own relationship, as she frequently speaks about the deep love and mutual support she shares with Henry.

A Today Moment to Remember

Thursday’s unexpected marriage proposal on Today was a moment that will be remembered for years to come. Not only did it highlight the enduring power of love and commitment, but it also showcased Jenna Bush Hager’s natural talent for creating unforgettable, heartwarming moments on television.

Whether she’s orchestrating surprise proposals, matchmaking her co-hosts, or sharing insights on marriage, one thing is certain—Jenna knows how to bring romance to the Today show.
