Craig Melvin from TODAY shocks viewers by publicly thanking his parents for “securing” his role on the show. But just how influential are they?

Craig Melvin has officially stepped into his new role as co-anchor of the Today show, replacing longtime host Hoda Kotb.

As he takes on this exciting new chapter in his career, Melvin has reflected on the struggles and sacrifices that shaped his family’s journey.

The 45-year-old broadcaster has been open about his parents’ hardships, revealing a deeply personal and challenging history that makes his success all the more meaningful.

A Family’s Struggles and Triumphs

During an emotional moment on Today, Melvin shared the painful yet inspiring story of his family’s past.

He revealed that his father, Lawrence Melvin, was born in prison and grew up facing numerous obstacles.

His grandmother, tasked with raising five children on her own, resorted to running numbers and selling liquor to make ends meet. Her involvement in these activities ultimately led to her incarceration, a harsh reality that shaped the early years of Craig’s father’s life.

Despite these challenges, Lawrence Melvin refused to let his circumstances define him. Over the years, he battled addiction and emerged as one of Craig’s greatest inspirations. The news anchor’s voice broke slightly as he described how much his father means to him today.

“My dad was born in prison, but that didn’t define him,” Melvin said. “He overcame addictions in his life, and he’s become one of my favorite human beings.”

Craig’s mother, Betty, also made incredible sacrifices to provide for the family. She worked multiple jobs, including picking up extra shifts, to ensure her children had opportunities she never had. Melvin expressed his deep gratitude for his parents’ dedication, acknowledging how their hard work paved the way for his achievements.

Emotional Tribute to His Wife and Children

Melvin also took a heartfelt moment to thank his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, for her unwavering support throughout his career. The couple, who have been married for 13 years, first met while working at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. Lindsay, a former ESPN sports anchor, has been by his side since the early days of his professional journey.

“My wife, Lindsay, has endured 13 years of me, and God bless her,” he said with a chuckle. “She’s been there for me from the beginning. This job comes with long days and short nights, but she has always been there.”

Their two children, Delano, 10, and Sybil, 7, have also been a source of joy and motivation for Melvin. He spoke fondly of them, expressing how much they inspire him every day.

A Journey Through Journalism

Melvin’s career in journalism has been marked by dedication and perseverance. His first introduction to broadcasting came during high school when he worked as an “Our Generation Reporter” at WIS-TV, an NBC-affiliate station in South Carolina. After earning his degree, he returned to WIS as a photographer and producer before advancing to a reporter role.

His talent quickly propelled him forward, leading him to become a news anchor for the weekend morning and evening broadcasts. In 2008, he made the pivotal decision to leave WIS-TV and join Washington, D.C.’s WRC-TV, where he anchored the weekend evening newscasts. Three years later, in 2011, Melvin transitioned to MSNBC, serving as a daytime anchor while also contributing to NBC News.

His skills and charisma landed him on Today in 2018, where he covered major stories, including NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics in South Korea. That same year, he was promoted to a weekday news anchor role and became a co-host of Today Third Hour.

Now, as he takes over Hoda Kotb’s seat, Melvin acknowledges the weight of the moment, crediting the team behind the scenes for their support. “People see us on TV every morning, but what they don’t see are the folks behind the cameras. We have the best team in television news, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Gratitude and Faith

Melvin, who has always been open about his Christian faith, took a moment to express his gratitude, not only to his family and colleagues but also to a higher power.

“Thanking my Lord above and his son, Jesus,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed a lifetime of blessings, and this is the latest in a long line of them.”

His faith, combined with the resilience and determination instilled in him by his parents, has played a crucial role in his journey. From a young reporter in South Carolina to a major morning show anchor, Melvin’s story is one of perseverance, love, and gratitude.

As he embarks on this new role at Today, he carries with him the lessons learned from his family’s struggles, using them as a driving force to continue making an impact in journalism.
