Craig Melvin accuses TODAY show executives of intentionally preventing him from making appearances, stating, “You will face consequences for this.”

On Tuesday, March 11, fans of Today were left puzzled when star co-anchor Craig Melvin was notably absent from his usual spot on the morning show.

The timing was particularly striking as it followed his recent announcement as the new co-anchor for the first two hours of the show, taking over from Hoda Kotb.

This development led to a wave of curiosity as viewers tuned in, wondering why Melvin wasn’t present.

Fortunately, his co-hosts were quick to provide clarification.

Peter Alexander and Savannah Guthrie stepped in to fill the gap, with Alexander joining Guthrie to co-host the first two hours of the show.

Meanwhile, Savannah Sellers also helped out, with Alexander and Sellers affectionately described as “cousins of the show.”

While the absence of Melvin left fans missing his presence, the team worked seamlessly to keep the show moving forward.

During the live broadcast, Guthrie lightheartedly addressed the situation. She explained that Melvin was out due to illness, confirming that he had tested positive for the flu. She jokingly added that his absence coincided with a significant event—Wofford College, his alma mater, had won a major basketball championship the night before. “I mean, you decide,” Guthrie quipped. “He did test positive for the flu. However, it coincides with Wofford winning last night, so maybe he stayed up and watched the game.” Her comment brought a touch of humor to the situation, showing her light-hearted take on the unexpected absence.

Peter Alexander, another of Melvin’s co-stars, offered a more serious update on Melvin’s health. He shared, “Craig, our friend, is getting well. He’s struggling with a little bit of a bug… Things are warming up, so hopefully that puts to rest flu season for the rest of us.” Alexander’s words reassured viewers that Melvin was in the process of recovering and that his absence was just a temporary setback due to the flu.

Dylan Dreyer, who appeared later in the show, also weighed in on the situation. During the third hour of Today, Dreyer commented on Melvin’s absence, saying, “If you heard him yesterday, it’s no surprise.” This playful remark alluded to Melvin’s apparent signs of illness the previous day, which likely made it clear to his colleagues that he wasn’t feeling his best.

While fans certainly missed seeing Melvin on their screens, many expressed their well wishes for his recovery. A viewer on X (formerly Twitter) shared a message saying, “Boo! No Craig Melvin this morning. Feel better 🤒,” reflecting the sentiments of fans who were concerned about his health and eager for his return to the show.

The absence of a beloved host was certainly a noticeable change for fans, but the Today team’s ability to adapt and keep the show running smoothly was appreciated. Alexander, Guthrie, and Sellers kept the show’s energy high, ensuring viewers didn’t feel the impact too much.

The timing of Melvin’s absence also marked a poignant moment for fans of the show. Just a few days prior, on Friday, March 7, Melvin had given viewers a special treat when his wife, sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak, appeared on the show. Their lighthearted exchange with Al Roker, who joked about being the third wheel, provided a fun glimpse into their relationship. The couple, who met while working in Washington, D.C., in the late 2000s, tied the knot in 2011. Together, they share two children—Delano, a son, and Sybil, a daughter.

As fans eagerly awaited Melvin’s return, they were reassured that his absence was only temporary, and his health was the priority. With a supportive team of co-hosts and a positive outlook for his recovery, it’s clear that Melvin will be back on the Today show soon, continuing his role as one of the show’s key anchors. Until then, fans are sending their best wishes for a speedy recovery, hopeful that flu season will soon be behind them all.
