A contestant on Jeopardy! who is fighting Parkinson’s disease brought the host to tears as they recounted their 24-year struggle to make it onto the show.

For some contestants, winning on Jeopardy! is a moment of triumph,

but for Harvey Silikovitz, stepping onto the legendary game show’s stage was a victory in itself.

The attorney and self-described “worldwide karaoke singer” had been chasing his dream of competing on Jeopardy! for over two decades.

On Monday, March 10, that dream finally became a reality.

Silikovitz made a memorable debut by dethroning returning champion Laura Faddah, who had been on an impressive eight-game winning streak.

However, for Silikovitz, this achievement went beyond the thrill of victory—it was a testament to perseverance, resilience,

and overcoming the obstacles that life had thrown his way, including his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

A Long Journey to the Jeopardy! Stage

Silikovitz’s journey to Jeopardy! began in 2001 when he first auditioned for the show. Over the years, he continued to test his knowledge, hoping to secure a spot as a contestant. In 2019, he finally received the call he had been waiting for—an opportunity to appear on the show. Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

During the March 10 episode, Silikovitz recounted his long pursuit of Jeopardy! with host Ken Jennings. “It’s been a longtime dream of mine to get here,” he shared. However, in 2019, just as he was close to making that dream a reality, he missed a crucial voicemail from a casting producer. By the time he discovered the message, taping for the season had already wra

To make matters even more challenging, just five months later, Silikovitz was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Despite the setback, he refused to let his diagnosis define him or derail his ambitions.

Overcoming Adversity with Humor and Determination

Rather than giving up, Silikovitz channeled his energy into managing his Parkinson’s symptoms while continuing to hone his trivia skills. His unwavering determination paid off in January 2025 when he was finally invited to Culver City, California, to tape his long-awaited appearance on Jeopardy!.

During the show, Silikovitz acknowledged his health struggles but used humor to lighten the moment. “I wouldn’t recommend that as a preparation strategy for doing well on the show,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience. However, he also emphasized that his motivation extended beyond personal achievement.

“After living with Parkinson’s for five and a half years, it’s no longer just about wanting to do well for myself,” he explained. “I want to give hope and inspiration to the people who are living with chronic illnesses.”

Sharing His Jeopardy! Journey

Even before his episode aired, Silikovitz took to social media to share the emotional and inspiring story behind his Jeopardy! journey.

“One of the principal reasons I travel is to learn more about the world,” he wrote. “That same voracious curiosity led me to become immersed in the world of trivia. While I believe that knowing stuff is an intrinsic good, I also enjoy testing my knowledge in trivia competitions of various kinds.”

He described his relentless pursuit of becoming a contestant, even after missing out on a chance in 2019. Rather than letting that missed opportunity or his Parkinson’s diagnosis deter him, Silikovitz remained committed to achieving his goal.

“I worked hard to manage my Parkinson’s symptoms—even while relentlessly seeking to improve my knowledge base as well as my proficiency at the skills, such as timing on the buzzer, that are crucial to success on Jeopardy!,” he shared.

A Dream Come True

In January 2025, the long-awaited moment finally arrived—Silikovitz flew to California to tape his episode as a Jeopardy! contestant. Though it took years of perseverance, overcoming personal challenges, and refining his trivia skills, he had finally realized his dream.

While winning on Jeopardy! is an achievement in itself, Silikovitz’s story is a powerful reminder that persistence, resilience, and an unwavering belief in oneself can turn even the most challenging circumstances into triumphs. His journey not only inspired fellow contestants but also resonated with viewers who saw in him the power of never giving up.
